What is the minimum pitch for a glass roof?

A large glazed orangery roof

Glass roofs are an excellent way to bring more light into a building. Whether they are part of a fully glazed conservatory or a lantern roof on top of a brick-built extension, they are guaranteed to brighten up any interior living area. At Oakley Green, we are experts in everything related to conservatories and extensions. We get many customers asking us an array of questions about different products and installation specifications. One question that we keep hearing is, ‘What is the minimum pitch for a glass roof?’

Glass roofs to meet any design specifications

Glass roofs are extremely versatile and can be customised to meet almost any dimensions and specifications. To ensure that rainwater flows off the roof and washes away any debris, an absolute minimum pitch of 2.5% would suffice. We recommend that a glass roof should be pitched at least 2.5%, that’s 2.86 degrees, to ensure that it is kept clean during rainy weather. To optimise the capacity for self-cleaning, a 15% gradient will be required.

Most conservatory frame systems allow for a glass roof pitch of anywhere between 2.5 and 45 degrees. The gradient you choose will very much depend on the style of your conservatory. For example, Victorian style conservatories will usually feature steeper gradients than Lean-to conservatories, but this is not a fixed measurement and glass roof pitches can be varied to meet the size and dimensions of your property.
